Labor Day

The end of summer is an interesting time.  It’s that moment when we reflect on what we did over the last 3 months, 9 months, or year.  It’s a transformative time in our lives every year when we move from summer vacations and unusual routines back to the rhythm of productivity.

In 1894, the first Monday in September was designated as Labor Day.  It’s a nationally recognized holiday designed to pay tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers.

It’s also a reminder that it’s time to get back to work and back to focusing on “building our world” individually, and collectively as humans.

For me, this is the time of year that I refocus all my energy on “Building Leaders”.  I believe that the future of our world depends on our ability to empower the coming generations to confidently be the leader in their lives.

Fire Up the Team!

As you move back to a rhythm of productivity and daily focus, empower the team around you.

Here’s five quick reminders:

1.      Bring your energy and enthusiasm.

2.      Pay Tribute to their greatness.

3.      Reset the Vision – what does success look like?

4.      Establish Goals for accountability.

5.      Cheer them on – Help them grow!

The greatest gift we can give our team is our time.  When we spend the time to consistently instill confidence, understanding, and belief, our teams will rally and achieve far beyond what we can imagine.

If you’re a business leader, fire up your team, staff, partners, and they will fire you up.  If you’re a principal, fire up your teachers, staff, students and community.  They will fire you up in return.  If you’re a leader of any kind (parent, community leader, teacher, coach, mentor, etc.), fire up the team around you.  The more energy you give, the more you will receive in return.

Fresh Starts

Empower your team with a fresh start.  Imagine if everyone on your team was empowered to start this new season:

·        With a clear plan

·        Confident in who they are

·        Defining what success looks like for them

·        Understanding the fears they will need to manage

·        Establishing goals for themselves

·        Establishing a network of people they can lean on for help

·        Knowing the immediate steps they can take to win each day

Imagine if you, as a leader, were aware of everyone’s plan.  Imagine what you could layer on top to help them surpass their dreams.  Imagine the obstacles you could remove before they became obstacles and imagine the culture of accountability you would create when you actively engage with rooting them on.

It’s a new year.  It’s time to get Back to School.  It’s time to get Back to Work.  It’s time to refocus, re-energize and bring our energy to the game.  Its time to reach for the stars and it’s time to empower those around us to believe in themselves and what they are capable of.

It’s the time of year to remove the “yeah-but’s” and replace them with “what-if’s”.  It’s the time of year to paint a fresh picture and stretch the imagination in regards to what’s possible.

·        What if we did this?

·        What if we did that?

·        What if we looked at this a little differently?

When we go back to school, we learn.  When we go back to work, we learn.  And… when we learn, we grow as humans.

Let this time of year be a reminder to enjoy the opportunity of a Fresh Start – Go Get Em!
